The Procedure

I can and will work from a sole photographic image if necessary, but ideally I strongly prefer to personally meet and see the subject.

We would start with an initial sitting, preferably during a sunny mid-day. Here the setting, wardrobe and general image and effect is decided. I will take several dozen digital images and might make some referential sketches. A one/third deposit of will be due. If the commission requires travel expenses those will be due as well.

I will then develop a draft study and a general layout, which is viewed either physically or electronically by the client for approval. I can then commence work on the piece and bring it to virtual completion. At that point I will show you the piece and ask for final suggestions and fine-tuning, for example capturing the precise expression and likeness of a loved one.

A portrait typically can take between 6 weeks to 6 months to finish depending on the many variables. If a deadline is required I will consider the feasibility of making it and might require an additional rush charge. I have never missed a date. Framing is not a part of my expertise so all pieces are delivered un-framed. They can be safely shipped anywhere. The remaining balance will then be due upon receipt or can be delivered C.O.D.

Please know that it is absolutely imperative to me that your portrait captures the essence and character of the subject and that you are completely satisfied. My process also assures you input and some control over the final image and guarantees the absence of a “surprise” unveiling. You can share in the creation of an heirloom with a rising American artist that will be enjoyed by many people for generations to come. Thank you for your consideration.
